Theatre Review: ‘Elmer Gantry’ at Signature Theatre

There is a moment in Elmer Gantry, about half way through the first act, when you realize you’re experiencing something great—something that you can’t see whenever the mood strikes you—something you can go around the corner and grab like a loaf of bread.

That something (someone) is Nova Y. Payton, the owner of one of the best voices in all of DC area theatre. We’ll come back to Nova presently—but it’s important to note that this musical version of the famed novel and celebrated Hollywood film from 1960, which starred Burt Lancaster, has several of those moments were you wonder if the rafters of Signature Theatre are going to come down from the sheer energy between audience and performer.
