‘AGED’ | Spooky Flick That Doesn’t Get Old

A sprinkle of predictability and a pinch of déjà vu actually work well for a film like “Aged.” You kinda know what’s going to happen, but you don’t know when, or how. And that adds fun to a spooky film that invites you to seal your prediction by the midway point and then sit back.

Morgan Boss-Maltais plays a young woman who is talked into moving into a house to work as a caregiver for the older lady who lives there. It’s the old lady’s son who tells the gal that she’s just who they’ve been looking for – absolutely perfect for the job.

Since it’s “temporary,” she super reluctantly agrees to move in with the creepy lady, and, of course, the house is also creepy. Dark past and so forth.

There are only a few ways the final act can go without getting unrealistic, gory or silly, and writer/director Anubys Lopez hits his target right in the sweet spot. It’s a slow build before reaching full boil, but at a tight 90 minutes, you can’t complain too much about the spaces in between the goodies.

The cast are on point and the location works well. This would have made a great episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents back in the 1950s.

Anubys Lopez’s AGED premieres on digital platforms June 15

I have never felt more extraterrestrial in my life. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why critics and laymen alike think this movie is good. I found it to be predictable, excruciatingly slow, and the acting was abysmal. I have seen better high school productions. What am I missing here? The plot is unoriginal, thr protagonist is profoundly unlikeable, and character interactions are awkward (and not in a suspenseful way). I gave the movie every benefit of the doubt, waiting for some remarkable twist that would redeem it. Nope. It unfolded exactly as expected and took forever to do so. A case study in mediocrity, in every way. Kyle – help me out here. I feel like I watched an entirely different movie. If this is now the standard for quality filmmaking, what do people say about really solid films like Hereditary or Come Play? Am I alone in my opinion, here?? Lastly – I know that I carry the worst name possible for 2023. I can only promise you that I am not a “Karen” in the modern conventional sense.
