‘The Invaders’ Review | Civil Rights Group Lost to History

It’s been a great year for Civil Rights era films. I’ll mention a couple below, but available to stream as of today is The Invaders, a documentary by Pritchard Smith. I was just a small child during that period, but almost everyone had heard of the Black Panthers and, of course, the KKK.

But somehow the militant group known as The Invaders has fallen through the cracks of time. The doc is enlightening and offers many “Wow, I never knew that” moments in its 80 minute run time.

Pritchard has assembled many surviving members of the group who were known to Martin Luther King, Jr., and probably to his consternation for part of that time. That’s because MLK’s message of peace was still met with violence and The Invaders were making no such promises of peaceful protests.

No, they did what is surely the most human and instinctive thing – they fought back. Take a punch, throw a punch.

The doc follows the rise and fall of the Memphis-based black power in group in the late 1960’s, from its creation to their final negotiations with Martin Luther King Jr. minutes before his assassination.

I encourage you to watch the official trailer below from Mass Appeal media. It’s available to watch now on digital.
