‘Sunrise’ Review; What’s at Stake?

He looks like a sad drifter – not a pathetic homeless person but a rambling guy who may or may not have someplace specific to go and something to do that is almost like a mission.

That’s Alex Pettyfer in the new horror(ish) flick, “Sunrise.”  Taken in by a kindly migrant family Pettyfer lays low, I the meantime, we earn that there are virulent racists in this small town where he has drifted to. Gradually, we learn of his past. He was a cop and now he is…a vampire!

Not the Vegas in a tux and slicked back hair type of Vamp, but one who must feed on fresh animal blood. Believe it or not, this doesn’t come off as ridiculous as it looks in writing.

But the real movie, the staked heart of it, is a modern Western. A High Noon-type thing where the good vampire (Pettyfer) is going to face the most hateful villain we’ve seen in a while; Guy Pearce as the white supremacist town leader and loudmouth. He’s vicious and we just now that he has to g

It’s the showdown we’re waiting for and, as the 90 minutes comes to an end, we are given a finale that we could not have expected. And it’s good, though not as satisfying as we’d have liked.

Still, Sunrise makes for a decent weeknight rental, if you like that sort of thing. Also in some theaters.
