It’s based on a fascinating true story that would make a terrific documentary for NetFlix. Alas, the story told as a semi-comedic, semi-fictionalized, Indie flick is uneven and not quite lively enough for the big screen–it, too, might just make for a decent streaming choice down the road.
“Finding Steve McQueen,” a bank heist flick based on the 1972 attempt to steal $30 million in illegal campaign contributions from President Richard Nixon’s secret fund, is never convincing as something that real people did– mainly because it’s populated with actors who are pulling faces that suggest farce.
Chief among the offenders is Travis Fimmel, starring as Harry Barber, a goofy small town rebel with a heavy foot and a penchant for American muscle cars, not a great combination in this Pennsylvania burg. It’s 1980, and it seems that the FBI may be closing in on the 1972 shenanigans-something he is just now,, for the first time, letting his girlfriend know.
Fimmel’s over-the-top quirks include facial expressions that make the Three Stooges seem subtle, but the always interesting William Fichtner keeps things somewhat grounded as the older, wiser “brains” of the operation.
The production values are top shelf, the soundtrack is an appealing, non-stop mix tape of 70’s rock radio hits, and the run time is a tight 90 minutes or so.
But when my friends ask me to choose between rating a film as a “must see at the theatre” or a “wait to catch it at home” (gee, what’s wrong the star rating system?) I’ll have to tell them the latter, not the former.
